Year 1 are taught by Mrs Kay and Mr Blake with support from either Mrs Morley or Mrs Burrill. During the year the children continue to develop their Literacy, Numeracy and social skills and they begin to apply these to focussed activities. All other subjects are delivered within our topic work. This ensures that there are still close links with Reception and the children continue to enjoy experiences across all EYFS areas of learning while accessing the National Curriculum. As always, fun and enjoyment across the curriculum are paramount but a great deal of emphasis is geared towards each child becoming an autonomous learner.
Topics are planned in a two-year cycle and always around the children’s interests and learning needs. An example topic would be ‘Space’. Within this topic children would learn when, why and how space travel began as well as discovering fascinating facts about the planets. Other key subjects would be embraced within the topic. An example of this would involve light and dark investigations in Science. To encourage speaking and listening skills, children would be encouraged to bring in show and tell items, related to the topic, from home to share with their peers. All creative work, which includes displays, D and T and Art, would be centred around the space theme.
As in other year groups, PE, Games, Music and Languages are taught by specialist teachers.
In addition to the wide curriculum, clubs available to children in year 1 are: German, Yoga, Ballet and Short Tennis. There is opportunity for individual music lessons too.
