Witham Hall Rugby Update
06 Oct 2017
Witham Hall 2nd XIII 15-20 St John’s Cambridge XIII
On Wednesday the 2nd’s made the trip to Cambridge to play St John’s. It truly was a game of two halves with the Witham boys not quite at the races for the first half; standing off in defence and not running with the aggression and commitment required, resulting in the half time score of St John’s 20 – 5 Witham.
The second half however was an entirely different matter; the boys came out of the blocks firing and didn’t let up for the rest of the game – showing real aggression in defence, St John’s barely got out of their half with Witham on the attack almost constantly. Unfortunately for Witham, despite the heroic second half performance, St John’s managed to hold on in defence (including holding up the ball over the try line three times). Final Score St John’s, Cambridge 20 – 15 Witham.
Witham Hall Colts A 10-30 St John’s Cambridge Colts A
The Colts A rugby team played a very strong and talented St John’s team on Wednesday afternoon. St John’s made a superb start, scoring some well worked tries by using the width of the pitch and their quick men outside. This stunned the Colts A’s and they reacted well, scoring an opportunistic try through Oscar’s slick handling. At half time and 15-5 down, the Colts A team were certainly still in the game but knew that they had to start running with the ball in hand with far more purpose. Pleasingly this happened through the power of Atan and Harry, who both carried well throughout the game. Atan scored Witham’s only other try but St John’s responded well with a couple more of their own. The final score of 30-10 does not reflect the efforts of all the Colts boys. It was a humbling experience but one that will set them in good stead for Worksop Prep next week.
Witham Hall Colts A 35-15 Worksop College Prep Colts A
The Colts A rugby team put in a sterling performance away at Worksop College Prep on Wednesday afternoon. After a very short warm up, the boys started superbly, making their tackles and turning over a lot of ball at the breakdown. This enabled the Colts A’s to have a lot of ball in hand and through Oscar and Freddie pulling the strings, they ran in some well worked team tries. At half time, Witham were 20-0 up, but knew that they could not take their foot off the pedal as Worksop were starting to dominate more and more in the rucks. A strong second half performance saw Worksop score a few tries through some very slick handling. The Colts A’s responded well and with the game going from end to end, with every single boy on the pitch shattered, a few late opportunistic tries were scored. A thoroughly enjoyable afternoon.
Witham Hall U10A 50-0 Worksop College Prep U10A
After a 2.30pm kick off at Ranby House, the U10A team had a really successful afternoon of rugby. The team displayed strong tackling, handling, rucking and mauling skills that produced hat tricks of tries for both Harry and Louis. Hugo had a great game successfully completing his two tries, with strong performances from the whole team including some amazing runs from Angus, Henry and Johnny, with Oliver and Alfie also scoring to take the final score to 50-0.

The U9 rugby team had a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon at the annual Barlborough Hall Festival. The boys supported each other incredibly well and there was some excellent rugby played throughout. 3 wins and 2 losses is something to be proud of and the whole group really have come on leaps and bounds in the first half of term. A big thank to all the parents who came to support.
