U11A Rounders win their way through to the IAPS Quarter Finals

13 Jun 2017

Witham Hall – 26
Yarm Prep – 16

It was a very long trek up to Yarm for the U11A girls and their 3rd round IAPS tournament match. However, the journey was smooth and the girls were in good spirits when we arrived. The weather was not quite so kind and with sodden pitches and a constant drizzle we ended up on the Yarn Senior School astro.

This was very much a game of two halves. In the first it did seem that not only were we still on the mini bus, but also that we had left brains, bats and the ability to catch a ball somewhere very distant. It was an agonising sight to behold! We finished the first innings 7 rounders to 14 down and faced a follow on.

After some chocolate and a little chat about character and fighting spirit not to mention plenty of encouragement to have some good old fashioned enjoyment with the bat, the girls went out for their second batting innings with lots to do. Fortunately they rose to the challenge admirably and everyone cannot have been anything but impressed with their team spirit, enthusiasm for the game, their support for their fellow team members and fortunately their ability to hit more confidently. The girls stayed in for about 45 minutes and took their score to 26. Top scorer was Millie with 4, closely followed by Bella, Lilia, Rose B and Rose A.

It was then the turn of Yarm to bat; they needed 12 ½ rounders to win. Having got 14 in their first innings, this was of course entirely doable. However, Matilda C led the way with some superb bowling and four batsmen out by the triangle by the end of the Yarm team’s second bat. The five remaining batsmen were rather more difficult, but Bella’s diving catch gave the team the momentum they needed to surge forward into attack again. Witham managed to field so much better; they were safe with the ball in the air or along the ground; throws were accurate; communication was much better; backing up was back to normal levels – Yarm were all out for 2 rounders!

Well done to Bella (c), Poppy (vc), Sophie, Matilda, Rose B, Rose A, Lilia, Millie, Gigi and Matilda H – a superb effort in the end after a week of exams! Next round is vs Millfield this next Wednesday.
